Watch Mel's Presentation LIVE!

George of Angelic Dreamz just announced that they will be live streaming the IDEX presentation at the Mel Odom/FDQ/Jamieshow event in Orlando on Saturday April 13, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM EDT

Here is the information and the link to join.

http://new.livestream.com/accounts/3557200/LiveFromIDEX

It's my understanding that other portions of the 3 day IDEX will also be broadcast but I do not have the specifics.

George also posted on Studio Commissary that the new doll will have a different body from the Jamieshow dolls. Will she be closer to the Gene Marshall body? Will a resin Trent follow eventually? Oh my.

Mel Odom: A New Doll?

Very exciting news just out: Mel Odom has teamed up with Jamieshow Dolls and FDQ in a new venture. It will be a doll. Jamieshow dolls are resin. Mel does Gene. So will this be a resin Gene? One can only hope. Gene collectors are just now reviving from fainting at the news.

If you want to be one of the first to see the doll and hear more about the future line (?), you will have to go to Orlando, Florida in April. Perhaps I'll see you there.

When:

Saturday April 13, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM EDT

Where:

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at Universal
5780 Major Blvd.
Orlando, FL 32819

Lunch with Mel Odom

Come celebrate Gene's 18th Birthday with Mel Odom. Hosted by JAMIEshow Dolls and FDQ Magazine.  Join us for a two hour luncheon featuring guest of honor Mel Odom, as he talks about Gene Marshall and announces a new collaborative effort with JAMIEshow Dolls.  This is Mel's first public appearance since the retirement of Gene Marshall in 2010. Meet and greet Mel in person, and watch a history of the Gene through the eyes of Mr. Odom. We will be presenting a special new Ltd. Edition doll at the event, which will be available for purchase and to take home!

Mel Odom’s art first attained prominence in the mid-1970s with a series of exotic illustrations done for glossy magazines.  These pencil and watercolor drawings soon attracted assignments from art directors of other magazines, leading to a seventeen year, free-lance relationship with Playboy magazine, and covers for Time and Omni magazines as well as countless books. During this period, a successful line of posters and greeting cards using Mel’s iconic images was published by paper Moon Graphics.
In 1995 Mel retired from illustration and focused on a three-dimensional project, a fashion doll for adults named Gene Marshall.   Gene’s story of being a movie star during the 1940s and 50s was irresistible to collectors, and within a year of her 1995 launch at Toy Fair, Gene was in fact a star.  Bits of her story came with each doll and costume and in 2000 her lavishly illustrated biography: “Gene Marshall, Girl Star” was published by Hyperion Press.  Gene has been voted in Doll Reader the most influential doll since Barbie.

Note: A full sit down luncheon will be served with three meal options. Choose meal options at registration.  Click below to register.

Event Cost is $65.00
Event is limited to a Maximum 150 people.
We are sorry absentee packages are not available.

_______

Integrity Toys announced the second W Club doll for W Club 2011 members. Actually it is three dolls which pleased many collectors. The collection is called Rock Fashion Wedding. The dolls are very attractive and edgy. I would prefer Erin without buck teeth but that can be easily repainted.

W Club members can order the collection for $330 plus shipping. If ordered separately, the total would be $360.

I will order the set not actually knowing if I will keep any part of it as I don't collect the NuFace dolls any longer. I don't have a problem with pre-order deposits, but the way things have been going with shipping delays, waiting 6 or more months for a pre-ordered doll has become the norm. Expected shipping is Spring 2012 — 4 to 6 months away. The required deposit is $75. per set of three dolls.

I like the lingerie and the filmy net skirt on Lillith. I see draping problems with the shorter skirt. It looks like there are folds that go horizontally out to the hips and an inverted pleat front and center.  That does not work at all.

Is the top of the net skirt made from the same material as the lingerie? I wonder if Erin's dress is also 2-piece? That would be cool. Her dress looks all black but the under layer is purple - the same color as Romain's scarf.

Here is my Photoshopped version of Erin's mouth.

I realize that some live models have a pouty-raised-upper-lip-thing going on but apparently it's difficult to translate to a doll. The 2011 Bergdorf Fashion Night Out doll had the same buck-tooth issue and it was for that reason I did not keep her in my collection. I like open mouth dolls as much as closed mouth dolls (I love Vanessa) but the teeth to lip ratio and proportion needs to work.

The male of the trio, Romain Perrin, is probably right up there with the best designed males they've ever done. One can only hope that the outfit fits as well as it looks like it does. He will be very, very popular.

True Confessions

In spite of all my good intentions yesterday, I managed to go back to Tonner Direct late last night to order Aragorn and Galadriel.  The grand total for the two gorgeous dolls was $86.40—practically free, right? Our addicted minds will tell us anything we want to hear. These had to be loss leaders or the dolls are less expensive to manufacture than I imagined.
*****
This past weekend we drove northwest to Canandaigua, NY to visit George and Tim at Angelic Dreamz.  We were treated to a grand tour of the fabulous historic firehouse that is the shop and residence. The weather was amazingly warm in the upper 60's all weekend. Rudy brought some poodle puppy love to the guys who, themselves, were parents to a toy poodle for years.
We stayed at a lovely, dog friendly hotel called the Inn on the Lake.

Rudy doesn't particularly like the water and I wonder what he is thinking as he looks out on the lake. Notice he's not that close to the edge. Smart doggie.

I love the way the geese closest to the approaching dog have taken flight. He's quite the hunter. Hehe.

The pictures above were taken with my iPhone and processed with filters using an app called Snapseed.

Shop 'til your mouse breaks!

I was so tempted to put Strider, Ranger of the North into my shopping cart today. This is one seriously hot doll and he is on sale for $50. with free shipping! But then I remembered that all these $50. (cheap) dolls add up to a goodly amount and I am trying to stop doing that.
However, you can build your Lord of the Rings collection for a small investment.  Arwen, Strider and Galadriel are $50. each.
LESS 20% which comes to an incredible $40 per doll. OMG.

Several other dolls are also reduced but these three are the best deals of all IMO.

Angelic Dreamz' price is only $49.99 compared to $100.79 at Tonner Direct on the 13" Wonder Woman doll.
****

Shop around girls and boys and shop wisely. Everyone wants your money!
Remember, there will always be another doll and another sale. Skip 5 sale dolls and you will probably be able to buy one of your grail dolls with what you would have spent on little stuff.
****

Time to confess...I did succumb to an outfit at Superfrock today. I bought the crazy "Burning Cookies" ensemble.  Luckily I arrived too late to purchase some of their other sale items as they had already sold out.

And last night I ordered a Madame Alexander Cissette Christmas Trunk Set. It was a great price with free shipping and no tax.  Trunk, dressed doll and two complete additional outfits. Yay!

Oh yes, did I mention that I snagged Geometry last week? Hehe. As a result of my own sales and not buying every sale doll that came along, I was able to purchase my second Sybarite. She should be here any day now.

If you are on every mailing list like most who shop online, you are getting tons of email from stores about Black Friday sales. I want to share an experience.
I ordered two items from Betsey Johnson's site two days ago. The items had been marked down from the original prices and I thought I was getting a good deal. Today I got an email from them announcing a 40% off sale for Black Friday. That meant a big difference in the price I paid.  I called and because the items had already been discounted off the original prices, they could not do a further adjustment. I re-ordered anyway because even though I would have to pay the shipping back and forth on the original order, my savings came to more than $40.  I think it was worth it. If you want to check out the Betsey Johnson site which is not doll related, here is the link. I love her jewelry!

JAMIEshow Swan Lake Dolls

Angelic Dreamz presented their Halloween 2011 mini collection, Swan Lake. These dolls utilize the JAMIEshow Grace sculpt. The White Swan is a Doll Reader Exclusive. What follows is an article from their website by Toni Fitzgerald.
Ying and yang. Black and white. Good and bad. The push and pull of two complete opposites that are nonetheless connected has long fascinated George Gonzalez, who runs the Angelic Dreamz store in Canandaigua, N.Y. When Gonzalez was considering themes for his Halloween mini collection for the JAMIEshow line, he was intrigued by the idea of a doll taken from the same mold but representing two extremes. And that's what collectors get with Black Swan and White Swan, two different versions of the same doll.
Doll Reader is offering White Swan to readers as an exclusive limited edition of 50. The doll, available for purchase in October, is truly breathtaking. Like her sister doll Black Swan, which Angelic Dreamz is selling, White Swan is based on the ballet "Swan Lake."
"We chose 'Swan Lake' because of its beautiful story and dark undertones," says Gonzalez, who says he is a big fan of ballet, particularly modern. "We also chose 'Swan Lake' because it is a ballet and our dolls, with their incredible articulation, fine lines of design, and mobility, lent themselves perfectly for the grace that is ballet."
Indeed, White Swan looks as though she might dance right into your living room. Like other JAMIEshow designs, she is a 16-inch (41-cm) resin, ball-jointed doll with 19 points of articulation. But she also has some new innovations that doll collectors will really enjoy.
"An added new feature to these dolls is that they have interchangeable feet and come with two sets of feet, one on pointe and the second regular high-heel feet," says Gonzalez. "As a company we are always striving for perfection and design ingenuity. Having feet on pointe that can be interchanged is just one of our innovations. The dolls also wear our new interchangeable rooted wig caps and come with an additional hard cap for wigs. This design aspect is a patented trademark only we produce."
Though the two dolls have the same mold, they are otherwise opposites. As fans of the ballet (or the recent Natalie Portman movie "Black Swan") know, "Swan Lake" tells the story of Odette, a beautiful princess who has been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer, who turns her into a swan. In the ballet, the part of the fair and gentle Odette is danced by the same ballerina who plays the sorcerer's dark daughter, Odile. The vile Odile dresses up like Odette and steals a declaration of love from her suitor. Odette, of course, is the virtuous White Swan while Odile is the daring Black Swan.
“I’ve always enjoyed the story of ‘Swan Lake,’” says Doll Reader editor Kathryn Peck. “It wonderfully lends itself to interpretation, and the costumes are gorgeous. When George approached us with the opportunity to partner with him in offering these two amazing dolls, we jumped at the chance.”
"The way the two are represented in the doll is completely different," Gonzalez says. "The White Swan is dressed in white, which typically symbolizes goodness and purity, and her face-up is also light and soft. The Black Swan is dressed in black, and her dress made of black feathers is coarse. Her makeup is dark, and she has a completely different look than the White Swan."
Doll collectors will agree that these yin-and-yang dolls do have at least one other thing in common: They're both irresistible.

Eshe's Turn in Front of the Camera

Here are a few straightforward pictures of Eshe modeling different wigs. I discovered that she can wear Avantguard's wigs which is great because I have lots of wigs for them.  I am dissatisfied with the curly wig that came with this doll. Just like Grace's wig, it's frizzy with hair going every which way. I did some post-processing on this image and it's still unsatisfactory.

I will definitely not be purchasing any more rooted wig caps.
Here she is in Grace's original wig. I washed and conditioned this wig twice to get rid of the crinkled, messy look. There is not much improvement.

The straight black wig cap had to be shampooed to remove the pomade-like dressing coating the fibers.
It looks good now.

This Joe Tai wig is definitely not for her. She's not a blonde.

Here are two Cheryl Wood wigs which are lovely on Eshe. These are hard cap hand made wigs.

Numina Devon's wig by Patta Art.

Ilaria Time of Doll Wig

Above you can see the bodysuit Eshe came with. She also came with shoes but they keep falling off so I tossed them aside.

I don't know if it's the crappy weather or what but I would be happier had I purchased only Grace. Eshe does not please me. Perhaps when I start redressing her I will warm up to her.  She does have gorgeous hands and luscious lips. In a future post I will review the joints and the posing.
