Sad Sally!

Somehow, in the midst of so many dollies, I missed the introduction of Sad Sally. She is a new resin doll introduced at the Tonner Convention last May. Here is a snippet from the Tonner blog:
...the absolute highlight of this brunch event was the introduction to a BRAND NEW DOLL COLLECTION for Wilde Imagination.  Prepare to fall in love:  Meet Sad Sally!  She’s a 7″ Resin Darling with changable eyes and hair.  Sad Sally is… well,… sad.  Her parents are two famous actors (who shall not be named), and whenever they host their infamous soirees, Sally sneaks into the coat room and snips the buttons off of the guest’s jackets. Ha ha! Sad Sally is rather sentimental, so she collects those buttons, and hides them away in a sad little shoe box underneath her bed.  OK now you’ve heard the cute quirky story, now behold the darling little Sad Sally, creation of the doll mastermind, Joe Petrollese:
Introducing Wilde Imagination’s latest Resin Charmer: Sad Sally!

Cute, right?!  Keep your eyes peeled for her later this year.  She’ll be available as an adorably melancholy dressed doll, with outfits available too!

I'm wondering if she will be the doll we will get at the luncheon in Kingston in 2 weeks. Or perhaps we will see her on Friday night at the store. Hmmm.
She is adorable.

Altered Color - Digital Magic

One of the themes this week on Prego is Black and White. I have an enormous archive of my digital doll photography, yet somehow, I remember individual photos even when they are several years old.
I like black and white images but even more than that, I like a shot of color in a b&w image. Here are several which appeared in a past FDQ piece a few years ago.
I do all my photo editing using Photoshop.

Boater Ensemble Silkstone and In A Dream Marilyn Monroe

Two new dolls arrived today.
First from Barbie Collector is the club exclusive Silkstone called Boater Ensemble. I haven't deboxed yet but I will as she looks next to perfect. I'm pleased. Mattel's updos and pony tails are the styles they do the best.

I like her ensemble, however it looks very much like an airline stewardess outfit. The hat is a boater styled hat and, of course, that is where the name comes from.

Click here for an interesting article about Boater hats on Wikipedia.

Marilyn Monroe "In A Dream" by Tonner

I purchased this doll mainly because I love the fashion. She looks exactly like the prototype. I removed the plastic arm protectors and had a little trouble getting the fashion back to the way it was supposed to look. No biggie.

I can't get the headwrap on the same as in the photo because I'm afraid of ruining her hair which is in a nice updo.

The real problem with this doll is the horrible doll stand. Tonner has been providing this awful stand for the last few years. The doll can't stand with her legs together and in most cases, the saddle that goes between the doll's legs shows through the garment.

Dear Mr. Tonner:
Bring back the old Tyler stands on adjustable poles. These stands SUCK.
Thank you very much.

Broadway Meets Tonner Doll

An announcement from Tonner Doll today:

Dear Collectors,

We've got some very exciting news to share:  We are releasing our very first venture with a Broadway license:  The Memphis Collection!  Here's a little background about Memphis:
Memphis features a brand new, Tony winning score with music by Bon Jovi's founding member and keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Tony-winner Joe DiPietro, who also pens the musical's book. Directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50's, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn't: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer.  Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever.

This is a very special release because it kicks off the Memphis U.S. tour.   To find out where Memphis is playing in a city near you, visit   www.memphisthemusical.com

Tonner Doll 2012 Fall Sneak Peek

Today Tonner Doll revealed the images of four dolls which will be part of the Fall/Holiday Line Release.

WONDER WOMAN, Steampunk#1
$174.99

Does that mean there will be a Steampunk #2? She's cute and I think it's interesting to rev up her costume which is beyond boring by now.

Both priced at $174.99  Holy Batman!

On the left is Sam Flynn and on the right is Quorra. I am not familiar with these characters except from the one Tron movie is saw. I liked the story more than the movie but not enough to want the characters.  The movie characters are way hotter than the dolls. Flynn's wig is excellent. It's pretty difficult to do great male hair on a doll unless it's a wig.

Gem $174.99

I had to look up who Gem is:
Gem is a program known as a Siren. She works in the armory underneath the Game Arena along with three other Sirens, outfitting programs and digitized users with armor for the games.
Gem first encountered Sam Flynn when he was captured and sentenced to fight in the arena. She and the other Sirens equipped him with his attire and Identity Disc, before offering limited advice that he simply had to survive in the games.
She later helped Sam find Zuse in the End of Line Club, also telling him that she wished she could have met him under different circumstances. A short while after, she was revealed to be in league with Castor as an accomplice in his bid for power over the Grid. This is where Jarvis attempts to hit on her
Gem was presumably derezzed when Clu 2 destroyed the End of Line Club.
These three character figures are definitely for fans of Tron although I'm sure that some other collectors will like the sculpts and see possibilities further than the fantasy.  I think they are pretty expensive for dolls that seem to be in simple fashions. I may be missing something.

The Year in Dolls - A 2011 Montage

So many dolls; so little time.
I just spent a few fun hours going through the doll stuff  that passed through my doors this past year. A fair amount of what is pictured went back out the same doors after I got bored, traded, or decided to 'reinvest' the funds. Some of what arrived isn't pictured probably because it hasn't even been photographed yet.
The original image is 5000 pixels square at 300dpi. This one is very reduced but if you click on it a larger version will open. Can you identify everything? Can you find Waldo?

Fun Photoshoot

I had lots of fun taking pictures today. In the back of my mind I kept hearing "Believe in the power of play." I believe it.
First - my Portuguese shipping buddy bought two new Vanessas. Delivered here first, they had to be photographed with their twins.
Ignore the stand in the first picture. These dolls have such wobbly bodies and I was lazy. After all, it was play, not work. My Miami Shine is wearing one of Eugenia's 2011 convention gift set outfits. Her shoes and handbag are La Boutique POM. My Obisidian is wearing a dress made by SL Doll Fashions and her bag and shoes are also La Boutique POM. I never liked Obsidian's original outfit with the chest-baring jacket but I still love both dolls. They are beautiful.

When the Dolls in Oz Monogram exclusive doll was released, I did not buy her. Ultimately I did get the doll but it wasn't until the other day that I got the ensemble. I hated the oversized bow so I removed it and stuck it on Dreamscape's head. I'm thinking of attaching a little tulle to create a hat. I like the outfit much better now. I do not have a single doll outfit in this shocking pink color. The fabric is lush and the cape is enormous. I'm glad I waited until one came along at a good price.

Last but not least, I played with the Queen of Hearts and the most recent Theatre de la Mode doll. Both are wearing Antoinette fashions. The silver crown is a Franklin Mint item. The rest of the jewelry is from varied sources.
I have decided that they are sisters. I rarely give my dolls specific personae but these dolls have great sculpts with strong personalities. They both have wonderful high cheekbones and are fantastic to photograph. I am so happy that I got this centerpiece, not just for the doll which anyone could have purchased but also because I got the throne. It's a wonderful prop.

Off With Their Heads!

Are you here to see the Queen? Only I can behold her.

Do not look in her eyes.

She is bored and pissed.

She will have your head.

I warned you.

Tonner Doll PLUS LittleMissMatched = Tonner Toys

Sporty Girl
" Just this weekend the LittleMissMatched blog gave us the first peak [sic] at a Tonner Toys LMM girl. These are going to be mass-market priced, super fun fashion dolls ideal for the young new collector who wants the real Tonner quality in the wardrobe – all taken from fantastic LittleMissMatched fashions – and a dynamic, everyday persona."
Uptown Girl
"Just this morning creative designer Jason Reilley snapped this quick pic seen above of Uptown Girl with his phone. Does she not look like an Uptown girl!?"

Tonner Doll has formed a new company called Tonner Toys. Robert touched on it in his address at the Ennui function a few weeks ago. Yesterday, Joanne Canapini wrote a long description of the inspiration for this line and posted it on Facebook.  Since not everyone has a Facebook account, I am posting it here.

Tonner Doll and LittleMissMatched join hands – Tonner Toys

Posted by Joanne Canapini on Jul 15, 2011 in LittleMissMatched, Sporty Girl, Tonner Toys | 9 comments

"... So, we thought a little background on LittleMissMatched and the relationship with Tonner Toys would do the trick! You just wait and see. LittleMissMatched is super easy to LOVE! I dare you to disagree with me…
Jason Dorf and Jonah Staw

LittleMissMatched
LittleMissMatched launched as a company in 2004, and began by selling bright and colorful, unmatched socks in wildly fun, mismatched patterns packaged in odd numbers for young girls and pre-teens. For the company’s founders, Jonah Staw, Arielle Eckstut, and Jason Dorf, it all began as a funny commentary about the mystery of disappearing socks, and the single mismatch it leaves behind. They jokingly concluded that they could solve the problem by wearing socks that didn’t match. Fun, right? Yep, we knew you’d love this! Plus, it’s funny because it’s true (thank you Karen Walker!).
LittleMissMatched started with a very simple mission: build a brand that is FUN, inspires CREATIVITY, embraces individual STYLE and celebrates self EXPRESSION. In our world, socks don’t match– MATCHING is mundane — MIXING is MONUMENTAL and COLOR is cool. While we started with socks sold in odd numbers, we recognized that there’s an entire universe out there who shares our passion for creativity and self expression — socks were just the beginning. From books to bedding, PJ’s to pencil pouches and flip flops to furniture, we say, think “outside the socks” – You can be a kid forever. Be BOLD, FASHION is FUN.
“LittleMissMatched is about creativity and individual style,” shares Andrew Arguiarro, VP Licensing & Sales. “Our dolls are designed to embody the LittleMissMatched brand and to inspire tweens to celebrate unique looks, styles and personalities.”
Want to know more? Check out their awesome blog, and YouTube channel! Be sure to follow them on twitter (@LittleMissMatch) and Facebook!
Okay, now we love LittleMissMatched, but, how on earth did this project come about? Well, I’ll tell you! It all began with the new dawning of Tonner Toys:

Hatched inside the offices of Tonner Doll Company, Tonner Toys is the brainchild of Robert Tonner, Jack Kralik, Jason Reilley, and a silent partner. The four are coordinating their efforts with boundless enthusiasm to make a splash into the mass-market world of toys with their premiere of the LittleMissMatched doll line.
Tonner Toy’s Lead Product Creator, Jason Reilley, said that he immediately wanted to work with LittleMissMatched when Tonner Toys was first established in 2009. “I was inspired by their freedom of expression, and the whimsical nature of their products,” said Reilley. “Also, I love their socks,” he laughs.
Robert then sculpted the head and face of what became LittleMissMatched, and the rest is history.
What makes Tonner Toys special and unique from most other toy companies on the planet is our design-oriented standards. In other words, because we are more design focused, as opposed to marketing focused, we believe that makes for a superior product, both in design and quality.
And that was totally intentional! Tonner Toys wants to make a product with a distinct collectible feel, but at a toy price point. This fun-filled partnership between Tonner Toys and LittleMissMatched, this marriage made in Toyland, captures both the essence of LittleMissMatched’s zany, fun, rainbow-bright world and the spirit and quality of Tonner’s realm of collecting and play.
Now, onto the dolls themselves!

LittleMissMatched Uptown Girl
There will be four LittleMissMatched dolls available: Artsy Girl, Rock ‘n’ Roll Girl, Uptown Girl, and Sporty Girl. As reflected in their names, each doll has a distinct, unique personality, one that she is not afraid to express with her fashion sense. Standing at 15.25” tall, LittleMissMatched dolls are constructed out of the highest quality vinyl with multiple points of articulation for ease in dressing the dolls in their fashionably mismatched ensembles.
Additionally, Fashion Packs will be available, which include spunky separates, some of which are reversible for double the outfit options, and double the fun! Staying within the Little MissMatched theme of mismatching but coordinating elements in stripes, polka dots, stars, and other fun patterns, Fashion Packs include shoes and multiple pieces, in addition to the LittleMissMatched earmark of 3 mismatched socks for the child.
On August 29th, viewers will have a chance for one hour only to purchase an exclusive LMM Gift Set on QVC. The Gift Set will include a doll, outfit separates and a surprise for the child. The dolls will be hitting Toys R Us and LittleMissMatched stores in the fall of 2011..."
