Age of Innocence

2013 Tonner Convention - Age of Innocence

Welcome to the gilt, glamour and intrigue of The Age of Innocence—the Tonner Doll Company 2013 Collector’s Convention!  We’ll explore times past both real and imaginary and from whimsical childlike innocence to sophisticated elegance.  This magical weekend begins on May 16th and will be filled with honest-to-goodness merriment--and you just may have the time of your life!

Robert Tonner and staff have packed this whirlwind weekend full of delightful fun.  We’ll visit candy land and Dr. Seuss; we’ll time travel to the Gatsby-esque elegance of the 1920’s and the swinging sixties, and meet in the grand ballroom for the enchanting Carousel Ball for dinner, dessert, and dancing!

And let’s not forget the Wilde side of things, where the absence of innocence prevails!  This year’s Wilde Imagination event is included with your Tonner Convention registration, and the dolls will be available for purchase.   Effanbee’s little sweetheart will be making an appearance too, resplendent in her wide-eyed glory, and she’s as innocent as a lamb!

Each attendee will receive two 16” fashion dolls, one being a splendid souvenir doll—one of the most exquisite to date!   We will also feature a tremendously stocked sales room, flourishing favors, an impressive OOAK Charity Auction, and the stupendous Raffle Room  at a new and improved time - This year, we will be holding the raffle BEFORE the Carousel Ball banquet, leaving MORE time for the banquet event!  In addition, registration includes 3 meal events and a dessert event!

Revisit a more innocent age and join Robert Tonner and company for a timeless Tonner Convention, won’t you?

Limited to 300 attendees, Registration cost is $399
$50 holds your seat, so sign up now!

Annual Facets Picnic

The weather turned out to be glorious for the annual picnic put on by Marcia Friend at her home in New Jersey. This was our fourth time and although the skies ahead looked ominous for a while, it was a sunny and mild day to sit outside and mingle with other doll collectors.
A dense line of clouds appeared over the bridge.
If you haven't been to Marcia's let me just say that seeing her doll collection is like going to a modern fashion doll museum. The dolls aren't just hanging out in cases, they are arranged in artistic tableaus with the finest furniture and props. While most of her collection on display consists of 16" dolls, smaller and larger dolls are included as well. In fact, her Cissy dolls are just to die for.
You might get a tiny idea from these shots:

Don't forget that you can click on any image to enlarge it.

Guests are invited to bring dolls along to display.

Paul Pham brought a OOAK Numina to display whose photo I have previously published.   Paul was surrounded most of the time by admiring collectors.

Adrian brought two of his Numina.

And there was food. Lots of yummy food. Rudy was a good boy. He stayed on the cool grass, under a table in the shade.

A fun part of the afternoon is the "free table." People send and/or bring doll stuff for this event. The crazed collectors (yes, I am part of that group) are held back until the GO signal is given and a free-for-all ensues. I was actually pushed very hard by a man whose name I don't even know. Some people are very serious about getting their free stuff. :-)

Our hostess:

But wait; there's more! Door prizes galore. Many were provided by collectors and many were provided by Wilde Imagination.  The prizes were very generous and lots of lucky attendees went home with great stuff.

It's always a fun day when spent with other doll people.

News About Upcoming Conventions

I have more information about the Jamieshow Convention which will take place on September 28-30 in Canandaigua, NY.
There are three workshops which will take place simultaneously on Friday. George Gonzales is doing Photography, repainting eyes and lips is being taught by Peg Stroud of PegFamousGirls and Styling Doll Wigs and Hair is being taught by Michael Scott. Attendees will be divided into three groups and will rotate through the classes so everyone will get a chance. The groups will be small enough for all to get personal attention. The workshops will take place in the Angelic Dreamz  historic firehouse building, the loft of which is above the shop. I've been there and it's a wonderful setting.

More about the teachers:
—You all know George's photography from the business and from his posts on the doll boards. They speak for themselves.
—Peg has been repainting and designing 12 and 16 inch dolls for more than 12 years.http://www.flickr.com/photos/89211057@N00/sets/  She is an accomplished tattoo artist and owns a business called Lady Luck Tattoo. http://www.tattooladyluck.com/
—Michael Scott designs and creates doll clothing.  http://michaelscottdesigns.blogspot.com He is also a professional cosmetician/hairdresser and he will demonstrate techniques to style the Jamieshow wig caps.

During the day on Saturday we will have a guided tour of the Strong Museum of Play's extensive doll collection and doll houses. http://www.museumofplay.org/collections/doll. Transportation and lunch is included.

Here is the outline of the schedule:

The Wilde Imagination event sold out almost immediately but I've noticed several offers from people who are willing to proxy for those who can't attend. There is probably a waiting list as well. Go to the Wilde Imagination site for more information.

The Integrity Toys event is always a big, exciting convention with lots of attendees, doll swag and more. This year it's in Orlando. There are spots remaining if you want to attend. Here is the link.
_____________________

Yes, there are other conventions taking place between now and the end of October and when I get more information, I will post it.

If you've never been to a convention, you might want to look back about one year on my blog for my post which discusses how much it costs to attend a convention.

This was based on past experience and attendance at an Integrity Toys/Fashion Royalty convention. They have changed the format this year: one less meal, higher convention price, more expensive hotel - so the numbers aren't exactly accurate but you can get a good idea. As they get closer to the date, a detailed convention packet will be issued with specific prices for convention collection dolls and other events.

The National Doll & Toy Collectors Club of NYC: 75th Anniversary Gala

The 75th Anniversary Gala of the National Doll and Toy Collectors Club of NYC was held at the Terrace on the Park in Queens, NY on Saturday, April 28 2012.  Although I have driven past the unusual building hundreds of times, I had never been inside. When I was a teacher, I took classes to the area's science museum. I've been to the US Open several times. And when Shea Stadium was there, I attended a couple of baseball games, too. But this was a first and I was very happy to have the experience. The restaurant is on the site of two past World Fairs and from it's high perch and huge windows one can see symbols of the last one, the Unisphere, and one of the remaining buildings. You can also see CitiField and the Tennis Center (but not in the picture below.)

Terrace on the Park is a very impressive location. The food was good, too! Delicious hot hors d'ouvres were served during the cocktail hour. At that time we got to see the centerpiece Evangeline. She is called Star Dust. She's all silvery with a flowing gown and lots of jewelry. She has glitter on her eyelids and incredibly long platinum hair. The centerpiece base was used previously for a display at a Tonner convention. That one was sparkly gold. This one is silver.

I have not removed my doll from the box completely but I've been told that she is wigged and that her hands and feet are removable! This Evangeline has the newly engineered, more poseable body.
She is quite a beautiful doll.
The image above shows she with her hair still encased in plastic and without her headpiece.

There were two vendors there in addition to Tonner -Wilde Imagination. One was Facets by Marcia, a wonderful institution by now. I love looking at her items and no matter how many times I find myself at one of her sales tables, there's always something else to see. One of her new products are wine glasses actually made from glass. The are so pretty and delicate.

Tonner had a small but delightful display of Wilde Imagination dolls.

The club itself had an interesting display of artifacts from their 75 year history. They also had a great display of Worlds Fair memorabilia.

Many people took time during the cocktail hour to buy raffle tickets and shop and chat with friends and the Tonner staff.

Joe was caught enjoying the food and Jack shows off his new iPhone gadget which reads credit cards. It was really cool. After a payment is purchased, the buyer signs her name by finger! No more machines. They make it so easy to spend, spend, spend. Michelle got a lot of practice with my credit card.

AnneMarie Beigner, the moderator of the Evangeline Ghastly Yahoo group, put together an amazingly gorgeous OOAK Evangeline and hand made fashions from members of her group. Some of the contributions were from overseas.  The auction for this wonderful collection took place near the end of the festivities. I think the winning bid was $725. All of that will go to the charity.
At first I was surprised that it wasn't more but in reality, the attendees were not solely Wilde Imagination collectors.  At my table only two other people besides myself had Wilde Imagination dolls.

Speaking of people at my table, this punk Ellowyne accompanied it's creator, Jane Bielak.

The highlight of the program was Robert Tonner's talk on the history of the fashion doll. It was really interesting and I couldn't help but think that it would make a great piece in FDQ. I could hear him well but the table at which I was seated was quite far from the podium and I could barely see the projection screen behind him.

The event souvenir doll was a stunning raven-haired Ellowyne with inset eyes. She is wearing a white lace dress with lacey tights and silver shoes. She is adorned with lots of baubles. She even comes with a rhinestone embellished crown!

Her name - Baubles, Bangles and Blues. What else?
I wonder if her right eyebrow is raised in a quizzical fashion intentionally. I love it. It gives her more personality and character.
Attendees also received a silver wrapped box which contained an Ellowyne fashion item.
Also in the souvenir bags were catalogs and an assortment of little goodies.
The club did a fabulous job putting on this event! Congratulations.
