That Was Underwhelming

I am writing this post during the confidential period. Shhhh! Don't tell.

On July 18, the "2013 Christmas in July Unveiling" by the W Club featured dolls I do not collect, namely Jem and the Holograms, Poppy and Chip, Teen Poppy and Victoire Roux.

The Jem and the Holograms line debuted three dolls who were known as The Stingers in the cartoon. If I were a fan of this line, I'd consider ordering these three because I think they are the coolest so far. I like their outfits and faces.

The Barefoot in the Park stars Poppy as Corie Bratter and Chip as her husband, Paul.
For those who like the youthful Chip, this one might be a winner. Poppy looks a bit haggard.
The clothes on the prototypes do not have the appearance of quality construction. Chip needs some serious shoulder pads and a better fitting shirt.

The gift set in which only Poppy appears has three ensembles, each of which comes with a coat and none of which I find attractive or necessary to own. But that's my taste. Poppy is pretty. I like the updo.

And then there are the Fashion Teen Poppy dolls. I do not like this doll's face at all. You can pick her up by her lips.

Out of the four new Big Poppy dolls, the following one is wearing a lovely, sophisticated outfit. It comes with a red hatbox-type handbag which is not shown in this photo. If this outfit were available separately, I would buy it for another doll.

The last doll was a Victoire Roux offered as a lottery.
I like the jacket and the hairstyle but the skirt does not lay properly.
Much of the commentary from collectors involves the word disappointed. These people were hoping to see offerings from the NuFace line or just didn't care for anything.

What was your reaction? Did you order anything?

  1. Even if you could get that Poppy fashion separately, it probably wouldn't fit anyone else. She has the skinniest waist and tush of all the 16" dolls, very few of her first wave outfits fit anyone else.

I ordered nothing. I recently sold all my 12" dolls, although it was hard to give up Victoire.

I was hoping for FR:16 in Japan skin tone, so I could steal a head for a Gene body. I prefer IT's stylized sculpts.

    i feel alienated...
first with the new FR2 bodies &
    now with this reveal.

    to me,
it seems like no doll company wants my money anymore.

    1. They want it. They're just going about it in a strange way.

  3. Nothing for me. That's probably a good thing, I got more money to spend on something else :) I do like the big poppy's fashion, they are really cute, but I can't stand that face sculpt. When I saw that some W club members pointed out that there may not be any nu face or FR and maybe more jem, I didn't believed them...

    1. I know many are hoping for NuFace and more Fashion Royalty dolls. Perhaps after the convention they will show up.

  4. Ugh. This brings to mind that whole heavily-promoted webinar that only promoted the Breakfast at Tiffany's dolls and nothing else. Horribly disappointing.

Victoire's bar suit would have been nice, but that print on the jacket reminds me of bad 1980s hotel wallpaper.

I'm just so tired of Poppy that I do not even care to remark on those dolls.

  5. I like the lottery doll a lot. It's almost Dior New Look, except Dior never did a double breasted in '47, possibly ever. The skirt is dreadful, but I would have bought her in a second. Maybe eBay...I wont enter the lottery, I just don't care enough about Integrity to go through the effort.
The rest is well, dreadful and as a child of the 80's those Jem dolls horrify me EVERYTIME. I LOATHE THEM! They ruined my childhood with a cheap knock off. There is nothing Jem (the brand, cartoon, or toy) about them IMHO.

  6. Nothing for me, thankfully, I've bought a few new dolls recently so I don't feel any lack. Even if I hadn't, nothing here interests me. I'm not familiar with The Stingers, is the guy supposed to have hair like Farrah Fawcett?

  11. I love the Poppy Fashion Teens! I think the face is really cute, and the bodies are great. The clothing is wonderful. I'm a big fan of '60s clothing, anyway. I'm not so crazy about Tulabelle, but that's mostly because I don't like her clothing.

  12. I really don't understand all these complaints people have about retro fashion lines. I mean if people don't like 50s and 60s fashion, which is erroneously being referred to as "retro", then fine and may I suggest going collecting barbie then or jamie show or something else that is more to your liking. IT and Fashion Royalty are apparently not it.

According to wikipedia retro refers to "clothing from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, or even early 2000's." Fashion from the 50s and 60s is not retro. Retro is trashy, campy and tacky, IT fashion is not. A lot of it - or a fusion thereof, is what is being seen on the runway these days, not to mention that IT did have plenty of dolls this year with contemporary fashions, such as the entire main line FR and some club exclusives. The chic fashions are the ones inspired by the 50s and 60s or earlier and no doll company out there beats IT's fashions in terms of quality, detail and haute couture feel. If people dont like it, they should go collect Tonner dolls then or whatever else they think is better than IT. No need to stick around and bitch all day how IT is not just delivering and catering to your exact needs.

The lack of NuFace has been disappointing but maybe IT should not have spent most of its resources producing nearly 2 dozen hologram dolls within one year. No wonder they got nothing else done, their factories were making Jem dolls mostly. They got a lot of peoples' hopes up and then there was nothing.

I seriously think people who just keep pissing and moaning that It is just doing it all wrong should just go collect somewhere else instead of ruining it for those who do enjoy.

    2. much of this year has seemed fairly juvenile to me. From this reveal especially. What is up with the Big Poppy face? her eyes are so far apart and her head is so big. she is quite unappealing.
i miss the old days of sophisticated glamour.

  14. I started collecting the IT Jem and the Holograms line this year. I have all of the vintage dolls too. You can't begin to understand how AMAZING it is to finally have The Stingers as dolls! I've been waiting 25 years. I am so excited and they can't arrive soon enough. I hope IT produces the last remaining dolls for Jem and the Holograms. It is such a delight to have new versions of Jem dolls after all these years. I for one am loving this line and am very grateful to have them.
