The New Gene: Phoenix

Here is her picture courtesy of Angelic Dreamz. She comes with two rooted wig caps and a plain cap for using with your own wigs. I haven't had a minute alone with my own doll to take pictures.
It is really Gene! A dream come true for Gene collectors although the price point may be a nightmare for some. It's better to have one gorgeous, high quality doll than 4 or five who will yellow. (At least that's what I tell myself.)
Phoenix Gene will be able to wear all earlier Gene clothes.

The price pre-ordered was $525. The on-line price for May delivery was $550. I was told that the entire edition of 150 sold out shortly after the additional 50, not reserved for event attendees, were posted for sale.

    1. Yes, there are two new, younger looking JAMIEshow models. They are shown on the new Jamieshow website.

  2. Sad. Mel said in an interview on this blog that Gene would always be plastic. That's what made her unique, that was his vision and that was his art. As the medium evolves, I wish he would have collaborated and created a new doll instead if consistently Selling Out the Dream, because at 150 dolls at $500, in resin, it's not Gene, it's not the vision of an 'affordable fashion doll' it's not Sharing the Dream. Broke my Heart.

  3. Let me also indulge, that from the promo pics, she is beautiful. That George and his team really stepped to the plate. I don't want to knock their efforts to bring Gene back. I don't think any one wanted Gene retired. Intergity's concept was often great, I have them all. I'm not sure the happy medium. This doll will be thousands of dollars on eBay, which is fine. I wonder what the future holds. I do applaud Mel for holding on to his brand. I eagerly await your pictures of her Terri when yours arrives and all the details!

  4. I've been interested in the fashion BJDs for awhile now, so this is perfect timing for me - I get to combine two interests - Gene and resin. I'm very excited to see her face in person to decide if the new incarnation is for me.

I understand the frustration from Gene collectors on the price point, but as soon as it was known it was a JS collaboration, I wasn't expecting any less. Especially when you look at the other popular fashion BJDs.

Frankly, $550 is was pretty reasonable for a convention exclusive - the Tonner and Wilde Imagination mainline dressed resin dolls have been just as expensive. I do expect the price for main line dolls to come down into the $400-500 range, and the JS basics are currently $325.

Do I expect to own tons of them - no. Would I like one or two to play with, yes, please.

  5. The price point was indeed heartbreaking, especially for one who was with her since her "Premiere". Many of us are not in the same financial situation we were 20 years ago.

Had I known for certain this was to be Gene, I could have sold some dolls, at least for the 50% up front money. I guess now, being on SSI Disability, I'll have to join the masses with TRU Barbies.

That being said, I am tickled those who got her did so!!! She is gorgeous. Both classic Gene, and yet still can look so contemporary!!! Did Mel/ George say anything about future fashions for Gene? Congrats, Terri!!!

    1. All I know for sure is that Mel is like a proud papa! My own belief is that this is only the beginning.

  6. I love how this partnership stayed true to the original Gene 'look', but if all these dolls are $500, I can't pick one up. On a different note, you mention yellowing bodies.. Is that normal with Gene? I have four or five and one of them has yellowed terribly and (oddly) unevenly! As far as I remember, she hasn't been in direct sunlight or anything and she has a jointed body, so she should be 'newer' than the straight limbed dolls..

    1. Many of the bodies manufactured be Integrity toys have yellowed. Yes, many are now uneven colors of vinyl. Resin doesn't yellow but don't put it in the sun for extended periods.

  7. None of my Integrity Genes have yellowed, I was under the impression that all resin yellows over time, some more than others, I've read and been told that it is a natural process of the material ,as many BJD sites talk about it, and how some collectors embrace it and others try to fight it off. I think the IT Genes look most like Mel's original artwork, anyway at 500 a pop I'll have to decline. Congrats to Mel, he's great
