Ghosts: Here Today; Gone Tomorrow

Photo Property of Barbie.Com
I was a little surprised that the Haunted Beauty Ghost Barbie sold out so quickly. She was released on 10/11/12 and is gone. The doll was a direct exclusive gold label and retailed for $100. So what was the big deal?
First of all, she's just in time for Halloween. Secondly, there's a cool video featuring Bill Greening discussing the design and creation of the doll. Thunder, lightning and wind along with eerie music punctuate the video. A great mock-up of a  haunted room shows the doll in all of her dead splendor.
Good marketing.
In reality, the doll is just another 11.5" semi-articulated piece of vinyl (what else is new?) that may or may not arrive looking like the promo sans haunted house and music.

The minute I saw her she reminded me of Tonner's Galadriel doll.

She also resembled another Tonner doll that was a centerpiece at the 2010 Halloween Convention. This doll was called "Welcome to the Here-after."

Tonner's Ghost of Christmas Past was a unique rendition of a ghost. The fashion is fabulous, detailed and a huge cut above the stereotypical ghost outfits.

So if you are morose over missing out on the ho-hum Barbie Ghost and you wish to indulge your morbid tastes, have a look at these ghost dolls.

Then there's always the good old standby Living Dead Dolls.

Isn't Evangeline Ghastly dead? They're not saying but if you read her back story,* she's must be. She doesn't know she's dead...
*(Inspired by Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride, The Addams Family, and even Barbra Streisand, Evangeline comes to you straight from the attic of Barkley Manor located in Ipswich, England, across from the local cemetery.)

I don't see the Barbra Streisand connection at all. (Hello, Brooklyn!)

  1. My first thought was that she looked a lot like Mattel's own Galadriel doll that came out some tim ago.

Were is this $100 price coming from? She looks like a $35.99 barbie

  2. They're sold out? I don't get it. It's just a white dress and some chains. We can all go into our doll rooms and throw that together. Weird.

  3. I ordered mine! I hope she looks a lot like her picture, she's so pretty and ghosty. I'm an Evangeline & gothy dolls lover, focusing more on 16-17" dolls now. I needed to spend my last Q BFC credit (and not buying it next year), so I'm glad she was released. $20 off, and the nice sugary bonus of free shipping for most of Oct, there was no question for me to click buy on her release day. (I missed out on Empress of Aliens and have been sad since, I don't buy many of the gold labels).

  4. I too thought she looked like Galadriel when I saw your post and more so the second Tonner convention doll I hadn't seen before your pic, she [Tonner Convention doll] is beautiful. Now I realize why I don't come over here and comment more often, lol, even when I have the cappicha right it makes me do it again!

    1. Sorry you're having trouble with the captcha thingies. It's a necessary evil given the SPAM and the crazies out there.

  5. I'm quite surprised of that fast sell out too. I didn't want one but I guess this just shows what the collectors really wants. Is she of the Cher mold by the way?

  6. I also think that Evangeline is part of the undead realm and a fantasy love of Mortimer that doesn't realize she is an obsessive ghost also in love with him!

  7. The Streisand connection to Evangeline is all in the hands, those very expressive hands...

    1. Streisand has beautiful hands. EG has gigantic, gnarled mitts.

  8. I agree about Streisand having beautiful hands. Evangeline's hands are quite large. But really, the hand connection was in the program when EG was introduced at Tonner Con 2007. At least that's the way I "remember" it.

  9. I totally don't get this. Do people have more disposable income these days? I have been a barbie collector for years, this year and last year had been kind of weird, every doll is selling out so quickly, the barbie collector online shop didn't even have a sale this year I think, although the quality of those barbies is getting worse year after year (I do think that the silkstone line still has much better quality compare to other collector barbies). I want the gala gown this year and still waiting because I thought that those $150 silkstone always end up getting discounted, but now I am not sure if I should wait...

    1. It's amazing, isn't it? There seems to be a lot of money out there. I got the notice that my Gala Gown has shipped. I'm really looking forward to this one and she'd better be amazing.

  11. Thanks Terri-I don't know where I have been but, I never saw the video. Anyone else think Scrooge, "Ghost of X-mas..."? Maybe it was the chains?!

  12. I think that mold is the one the used for Joan Jett and before that Model of the Moment Nikki.

  13. Received mine yesterday...she's not as 'pretty' as the promo shots.
She actually looks like a 50 year old model...sorta like Carmen Del'orfice (sp?) in her silver haired hey-day? Post hey-day?

I dont dislike her look...its the use of MM legs and ONLY fashionista arms/hands and NO shoes that puzzle me...and like others...I cannot justify this doll costing 100.00...she's definitely NOT a gold label doll...At 50.00 she would have been more 'likable' for me.
    I won't be keeping mine.
    ;)

    1. If she looked anything like Carmen, I'd buy her in a second.
