Tonner's Bombshell - Supergirl

Of course I needed another doll. Silly question.

We picked up "Bombshell Supergirl" from my dealer this morning and she doesn't disappoint! This doll is gorgeous. I purchased her for the love of the sculpt so the costume is going to be sold.

These are iPhone photos shot on my kitchen table.
Is there something strange about the S on her belt?

She's got a nice curly, well-gelled hairstyle that will stand up to redressing.

The applied eyelashes are strange. Usually I have to push lashes upward so they don't cover a doll's eyes. In this case, they were applied so they touch her brow. I'll have to fix them.

I do have an issue with these gauntlets. There's nothing wrong with the fit but the part where the hands come out have unfinished edges. Sure it adds manufacturing time to finish edges but this is not OK. They're a bit frayed already and will continue to fray if handled. I'd advise any collector to use a product like Fray Check to seal the edges. I keep it handy all the time in my sewing room. Don't squeeze it directly onto the fabric. Put a few drops on a non-porous dish and dip your fingertip into it. Use your fingertip to skim the edges of the fabric with the product. It dries clear but if you glop it on, the results will not be good.

The "fit" body is the same as Tyler's but with shapely arms. She'll be able to wear all of Tyler's fashions.

I've been in love with my first Supergirl, "Phantom Zone," (Tonner Doll Exclusive at San Diego Comicon, 2008) from the day I got her and I just could not pass up this new one who uses the same sculpt.

    1. Hi: I'm so glad it finally worked. Google probably gets points for driving people crazy.
      Anyway, you will love her.

  3. Troy has left a new comment on your post "Tonner's Bombshell - Supergirl":

It's always nice when a doll lives up to her pre-sale press, and that you're pleased with her. She's on her way here, too. Can't wait to see her in person!

So glad you shared pictures of all of the Supergirls. I had no idea there were so many! I had also been thinking of buying the DC Stars 2007 version, but she's a bit more costly than Bombshell, and a bit more of the "usual" dolls. Bombshell is one of the more glamorous 16" dolls I've seen.

  4. She does have a beautiful sculpt.
The photos of her face remind me of those much retouched head shots of movie stars from the 30's, with unbelievably long lashes...each one perfectly spaced. Though these are more disturbing.
    As always love the blog

    1. Hi Willl:
I'm about to trim the lashes right now. These are just too strange.
      Thanks,
      Terri

  5. Such a gorgeous doll- I got mine too :D

Her eyelashes are a little weird though- both the top and the bottom. I'm not sure what they were going with here but it's not good...

    1. Are you going to trim the lashes?

    2. Well actually the bottom lashes are more obnoxious to me than the top- and more difficult to fix. I think I will bring her to a friend who as better at these things for "fixing." She could look so much better...

  6. Ooh, I think she looks more appealing in your pics than in the promos, actually! "Bombshell" is a perfect descriptor. But I agree, the lashes are a bit odd. In particular, the painted lower lashes bring to mind running mascara!

  7. This is one of the best sculpts I have seen from Tonner! They do need to get a different source for eyelashes, though. The ones they use are way out of scale, and look more like spider legs. Same issue on the Marilyn Monroe dolls. Jamieshow, Integrity...they all use great lashes. Not sure why Tonner can't follow suit.

  8. If you view the bombshell supergirl comics or the statue they made you can see the eyes are very dark and painted with thick dark mascara so I think tonner did what they could to make the doll resemble what she looked like. I dunno.

    1. Thanks for sharing that tidbit of info.

    2. I would like to agree with that, except those are the same type of lashes they use on all their dolls. The don't look too bad on the larger ones (like the 20-24") but on the 16", they are just way too much.
