I have no antique dolls in my collection but I do love to look at them. I adore the beautiful fabrics, the delicate facial painting and expression and the accessories. My favorite of all are the tiny, all bisque Mignonettes of about 5 inches. They do come is various sizes and were often called pocket dolls. Although most were created in Germany, they were made for a French market and thus showcased French fashion of the time. Many of these dolls came with complete wardrobes and all the necessary toilet items a young lady would need in the later 19th century and early 20th century.

Getting back to Theriault's upcoming Antique Doll Auction, the catalog is a delight to browse and an education in and of itself. Hundreds of gorgeous photos with descriptions and estimated valuations.
Antique dolls are so beautiful, and that catalog is brimming with things to ooh and aah over. The parasol with the doll on top was something that I had never seen before.
ReplyDeleteThat reproduction boudoir set is exquisite! Not being original, it would be easier to justify enjoying tactically, rather than just admiring it from a safe distance. :-)

DeleteThanks for featuring these on your blog. I've always been fascinated by them as well, and yet know so little about them. Knowing me, if I had one in my collection, I wouldn't be able to let it just sit there, and I am sure I would break it from messing with it too much. The reproduction set is a really fantastic idea. You know how Ruby Red Galleria has a repro Bluette? I wonder... Wouldn't it be cool? (RRG does tiny stuff so amazingly well!)
