One doll that will never make it through my front door is Shoe Obsession Barbie. Yes, those are shoes held in a tulle overlay on the dress. Her face is scary-cheerful. This doll is wrong on so many levels. Designed by Linda Kyaw who also designed the literal Pantone Barbie. Retail. $39.

The only thing I want is the necklace from the Hope Diamond Barbie doll. I can just imagine how the hair will arrive on the real life doll. The facial screening is too cartoon-like for a sophisticated presentation like this. $75.

If you haven't seen pictures yet, here are pictures of the initial release of 2012 Dolls of the World which are due to be available in December. Designed by Linda Kyaw. Retail $29.99
From top to bottom they represent Argentina holding a baby cougar, Australia with a gray koala, China has a panda and Ireland holding an Irish Setter.
I'll take one of those "Shoe Obsessed" Barbies.. on Sale. Mattel must have made 15 Billion of these Model Muse bodies. [I keep hoping Mattel will give us the Pivotal bodies.]
ReplyDelete@James: Ditto what you said!

Judging from the above designs, they are seriously running out of ideas. So many repeats, too. The only thing i like is Australia's outfit. ~ib
ReplyDeleteThe first time I saw the shoe Barbie I was all "Oh, what a cute dress... wait... are those shoes?!" And then I didn't think it was cute anymore. I don't care for any of these unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI think the big passport size looks like an additonal outfit for a dancing cigarette pack costume! First tats, now smoking--LOL!
ReplyDeleteSigh,
ReplyDeleteOh Linda Kyaw. I mean. Oh, just terrible. Love the dress on the Hope Diamond though. I'm assuming she didn't design that one.
Ditto to both of you!!!
ReplyDeleteMattel needs to step up their game and stop being so cheap! If you want to charge prices comparable to Integrity, give us articulation AT LEAST!!!
I'm so not looking forward to next year!
ReplyDeleteWow - I sure hope Mattel can do better than these for next year - blah! Wouldn't waste money on this sorry lot! Hoping for some more Vintage Repros and some beautiful Silkstones. It's not as if they can't afford to do better!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I am a little tired of all the Mattel bashing as of late...not just here but on the doll boards too, most of these are playline people! I am sure that many little girls will love the dress with shoes in it! These aren't meant to be at the level of $125 dolls from Integrity etc. Mattel paved the way for many of the other doll companies and still produce many lovely dolls for adult collectors. I love my other dolls too, but Barbie rocks! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! lol
ReplyDeleteMattel did such an outstanding job on their Basics line! And then...there is this shoe fiend...I don't get it. Love Barbie, but...uh, not this release. And Terri, I'll take the HD dress, lol.
ReplyDeleteNone of those are playline Anonymous @ 10/28/11 12:51 PM.
ReplyDeleteShoe Obsession is $39 not a playline price and is the same price as the fully articulated Klimpt and Davinci Barbies released this year.
Why is SHOE Obsession Barbie Wearing Boots exactly?
It's not link anything else on the doll is subtle or understated so why not go with the obvious? Wacky, colorful SHOES,
In response to the Mattel bashing comment, I had the idea that this blog's main appeal was for adult doll collectors. Dolls such as Barbie Fashionistas and such are more suited to little girls. The above dolls seem to me a bit sub-standard (cheap)for adult collectors tastes and for what a multi billion dollar company like Mattel is capable of creating for the adult collector. No Mattel bashing was intended - but assuredly they certainly do not need to be defended considering their gross annual profits.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have such pretty dolls when I was a little girl!
