Dolly News Updates

Convention season is almost upon us and there are things going on all over.

Kingdom Doll announced that they will be working with renowned doll artist/manufacturer Doug James. They're not saying what Doug will be doing exactly and that will be an interesting revelation. Fashions, perhaps? KD states that "Doug is the owner of JDJ International, creator of the "S: series of resin fashion dolls as well as the popular CED 19" fashion doll line. In addition, James has designed...for the Madame Alexander Doll Company, Integrity Toys, L.L. Knickerbocker and Ashton Drake."
Also, stay tuned for the announcement about the release of the next doll, Hadrian.

Integrity Toys 2014 "Gloss" Convention sold out in two days. That's probably a record setting sell- out. There is a wait list. Link will take you there.
The second W Club exclusive doll was made available for pre-ordering by Club members only. She is the ultra popular Poppy with the favored so-called "Bergdorf" screening. (Right)

Why not release a redo of the Bergdorf doll? I have seen ridiculous prices for this gal. I sold a few for ridiculous prices myself. It is a very pretty doll.

Tonner Doll Company  continues to try to offload unsold goods at retail prices by calling them Warehouse Finds. Seriously, how messed up is their warehouse?
If these items were sold out, there wouldn't be any for sale. We do have brains.
Lady Arabella was the convention souvenir. Carmen was the special optional purchase doll. None of these is at a reduced price but if you still want one, go for it.  Ordering is by telephone only. To place an order call 845-339-2960.
I've written many times about how selling convention dolls shortly after a convention detracts from that special feeling of getting a truly exclusive doll. It's disrespectful to those who paid to go to the convention.

The Junky Spot announced Jun Planning's Groove Pullip "Make It Own" blank Pullip Kit.

This looks like fun and the price is so right at $34.99. I want one but do I have the motivation? Not really.
Made from ABS plastic.
Completely unpainted doll with disassembled head, ready for customization.

Integrity Toys Joins the Ranks of Paramount/Hepburn Doll Licensees

Today Integrity Toys introduced a collection commemorating the 50th anniversary of the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany's.   The collection consists of 6 items as follows: 3 dressed dolls at $125. each, 1 dressed doll giftset at $175. 1 basic doll at $89. and 1 basic doll at $175.  The dolls will be available at dealers.
The bodies they used for these fashionable dolls are the Poppy doll body sans articulated ankles. That was a mistake. The shoes don't look high styled enough. Holly's were low heeled but very pointy and the doll would have been wonderful with regular pumps.

The fashions are based on the iconic looks from the movie, the following one being the most recognizable:

How Do I Look? Holly Golightly Dressed Doll Gift Set LE500 $175.

I would have liked it better if she had been sculpted with a cute little smile. She looks too pensive. Audrey's look was playful and engaging. Her eyes lock onto the viewer.

IMO Mattel's Holly was the most successful reproduction of the star in that role.

Pictures of other Holly Golightly dolls follow.

How Many Alices Are There in Wonderland?

Has the Alice in Wonderland theme been overdone? Yes, it's been going on forever. It's the definition of a classic. The story is an ageless one that has enchanted children and adults alike since it was written in 1865.  The story embodies the battles of good vs. evil, apathy vs. involvement, greed vs. generosity and on and on. Who doesn't identify some opposing characteristics in their own personality?

When I saw the numerous Wonderland dolls at IDEX in January, I was impressed by how many different companies and individual doll artists chose to do Alice themed dolls this year. It was not that surprising due to the Alice in Wonderland movie but seemed rather odd that there were so many.

Has one company 'done it right' above all others? No. With the variety of Wonderland themed dolls out there, it's foolish to compare.

I understand that some collectors have an irrational loyalty (also known as ass-kissing) to some manufacturers and so their praise for that company is endless. These people need to become educated about what's out there.

I have already posted the new Integrity Alice.

Tonner has produced several Wonderland character dolls and stunning fashions.

This is Mattel's latest Alice:

Some others that may be available at different sources on the internet:

Madame Alexander Cloth Alice

Madame Alexander Alice

Living Dead Doll - Alice

Vogue Marge Meisinger's Alice Vintage Repro Ginny Doll

 Azone's Sahra in Wonderland

Pullip Fantastic Alice  (12")

Gwen Stefani "Tick Tock Gwen"

This is just a small sampling of Alice in Wonderland dolls. I've not even touched on the fantastic OOAK and artist dolls which are gorgeous and very pricey such as Maggie Iacono's "Painting the Roses Red" for $1,695.00 or R. John Wrights "Alice in Wonderland for $1,180.

Doll Reader magazine has published several issues with cover stories that depict artist dolls that are Alice themed.

There's no comparing one with the other. But...if a company decides to do Alice, one hopes that it's different from any Alice that's been done before and not just another run of the mill blond in a blue dress with a white apron.
