Maleficent Doll Transformed by Noel Cruz

Noel Cruz, master doll re-painter, has created a doll that looks just like actress Angelina Jolie who stars in the Disney movie Maleficent. He used a Jakks Pacific Maleficent doll to work his magic.

When I first saw this picture, I thought it was a still from the movie.

The doll is on eBay and the bids are up to $1,525. already. Perhaps Angelina herself is bidding on it.

Oz Doll - meh

I purchased Oz, Theodora and China Doll. I will add this to my list of impulsive mistakes.

While the sculpt is attractive and well executed, the rest of the doll is just like a cheap Mattel product.  The outfit is flimsy and cheap-looking upon close inspection. Of course, the closures are velcro. The vest is not a separate piece but actually part of the front of the shirt! His 'bag of tricks' does not open.

He is just about the same height as a Silkstone doll but his head is quite large for his body. His movable joints are his neck, shoulders, elbows and legs. Oz can be made to stand unsupported but not easily. If you wanted to pose him as shown on the package front holding his bag and China Girl, you will have to rubber band them to his arms.
I had to destroy the package to get them out. It was awful.

I decided not to take Theodora out of her box. The thought of bulldozing through the iron-clad packaging was a turn- off and after getting Oz out of his box, I was pretty turned off.

The separately available 4" China Girl (who is still in her package) is exactly like the doll Oz carries with him in his package. That would have been good to know in advance because then I would not have purchased another.

Her joints are the neck, arms and legs. I was hoping that her elbows would bend.
She's all molded vinyl and the only use for her I can see is as a toy prop for my larger dolls.

Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful Dolls

Now that the movie has opened, there is a lot of interest in the dolls from the Disney movie Oz the Great and Powerful.
Don't even think about buying these on eBay unless the shipping is free and the basic prices are as I have listed below. The prices are all over the map. There is a 19" resin (polyester) China Doll who is a limited edition of 500 that is being sold for extraordinarily high prices- averaging about $500 more or less.
She was my favorite character but not that favorite.

All four witch dolls and Oz holding the tiny China Doll are $19.99 each on Amazon and at Toys-R-Us. Free shipping included. The 14" China Doll is $21.99. There is also a 4" China Girl listed at $18.47.
I do not see the 4" at Toys R Us, however.
I have admired these dolls since I first saw them and I am ordering them just for fun. (aka lack of impulse control)
They are articulated and I'm hoping the fashions are not sewn on.
BTW, Theodora's fashion in the movie was to-die-for. Her pants were leather and super tight. Mila Kunis is a stunning woman. The movie was sort of fun but don't expect fine acting. Watch the original Oz if you want a truly great movie.

More OZ?

Walt Disney Studios has just released this striking character featuring the Wicked Witch of the West as envisioned in their upcoming release, Oz the Great and Powerful.
Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful wizard but into a better man as well.
“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth, with a screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (credit not final). Grant Curtis, Palak Patel, Philip Steuer and Josh Donen are serving as executive producers. “Oz The Great and Powerful” opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.

For us, it's all about the dolls. These are the only images I could find. I'll be on the lookout for more information regarding release dates, availability and prices. They look very interesting. If you are an OZ lover, these may belong in your collection.  They do not look like Barbie. Yay.

The Mad Hatter

As if the world has rediscovered the classic childrens' fairy tale of Alice in Wonderland, Alice mania has hit the doll world with force. At IDEX many manufacturers showed new Alice in Wonderland dolls for 2010.
You may or may not know that the movie by the same name will be opening tomorrow, March 6, with the fabulously talented, slightly crazy Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
This post will show you some of the Mad Hatter dolls that are currently on the market, will be soon or have sold out already. They come in all sizes and prices.
Below are links to the websites at which I found them, prices (if available) along with an image.

The following items can all be found at Entertainment Earth:

Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter Doll $199.99

Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat Kubricks $18.99

Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter Ultra Design Action Figure $19.99

Tonner Doll Company
"Images pending licensor and actor approval." I saw the pre-production doll and it's amazing. It's too bad it couldn't be ready for the movie opening. Those in doubt would do well to wait before buying another Hatter. Tonner's is amazing.

Tarrant - The Mad Hatter - Dressed Tonner Character Figure $224.99

Will the REAL Mad Hatter please stand up?

Walt Disney did not create the story of Alice in Wonderland. Lewis Carroll wrote two Alice novels, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. (1872) Click here for more information on the two pieces of literature.

Will you be adding Alice in Wonderland dolls to your collection?

Integrity to Compete in the Supernatural Themed Doll Market

Along with Ashton-Drake, Integrity Toys is working on a project to produce characters in 1/6 scale from the Dark Hunters' series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I have to admit that I never even heard of this series until I read the announcement. With my tail between my legs I slunk off to Wikipedia and Amazon to look. Apparently Ms. Kenyon is a book writing machine, pumping out book after book filled with stories of paranormal romance. Since her first book, Fantasy Lover, which was published in 2002, seventeen (!!!) more books in that series have been published. In addition there have been thirteen short stories and novelettes published in the same period. I wonder if that's a record.

It's fairly widely known that Ashton-Drake quality control is far from reliable. If Delilah Noir is any indication of future quality then this new project may be doomed from the get-go. In any event, it won't be boring.

There are two more Integrity projects in the works with Ashton-Drake as well. One is Disney related and the other is vampire related. Both will be under a new Couture Fantasy label. I cannot wait to see this.
I just hope that the convention does not become about dolls other than Fashion Royalty. It's already happening with the introduction of Poppy Parker as a table centerpiece. It's not new as Dynamite Girls and Hollywood Royalty were also introduced as centerpieces. But if it's a Wu convention, I want WU not WHO.

Next they'll be collaborating with Mattel.

Just kidding, people. Don't spread any rumors.
